VSLC provides training for Peace Trees Vietnam

On 13th and 14th March, VSLC delivered a two day custom first aid training programme to Peace Trees Vietnam team in Dong Ha, Quang Tri province. The training was funded by the US Department of State Office of Weapons Removal & Abatement.

Peace Trees Vietnam is an NGO that was established in 1995. Its mission is to heal the legacy of war by removing dangerous explosives, returning land to safe use, promoting peace and cultivating a brighter future for the children and families of Vietnam. At the time of writing, Peace Trees Vietnam have cleared 3,170 acres of land, removing and destroying 110,636 unexploded ordnance. Since the war ended, 40,000 Vietnamese children and adults have been killed by unexploded ordnance left behind – and it is estimated that unexploded ordnance is still buried below 80% of land in Quảng Trị province.

Our two day custom first aid programme focused on the specific needs of the Peace Trees Vietnam team. We covered scene assessment and casualty prioritization, basic life support and AED use, critical bleeding control, fracture management and spinal immobilsation and evacuation – and more! The training culminated in scenario practice, where participants are divided into groups and practice managing different realistic scenarios, specific to their environment, and in line with their evacuation policy. This was the second time VSLC delivered training for Peace Trees Vietnam, and we hope to have the opportunity to provide further training in the future.

Peace Tree’s Training Supervisor, Phuong Pham, said: “VSLC’s training course provided our medics an opportunity to refresh their skills and update new techniques in first aid. The scenario practice in the course was the highlight, where it pushed the participants to make decisions promptly and thoroughly. Would certainly recommend!”
