VSLC Pool Rescuer Qualification

Our Pool Rescuer qualifiaction is designed for those responsible for small swimming pools and low risk environments. It is taught in line with inernational best practice and European Resuscitation Council Guidelines, and is UK endorsed. This course is typically delivered over 3 days.

 

Qualification Details

Qualification Name: VSLC Pool Rescuer
Current Version: v1.1

Endorsed by: The Swimming Teacher’s Association (STA, UK)
Governance: Taught in line with European Resuscitation Council Guidelines

Duration: 18 hours contact time
Validity: 2 years from the date of the course. Refresher training is recommended at least annually.

 

Swimming Pool Knowledge:
• Identify health and safety aspects relevant to the swimming pool environment
• Risk assess a swimming pool
• List areas covered in a Normal Operating Plan
• List areas covered in an Emergency Action Plan
• List the role and responsibilities of a pool rescuer
• List the rescue equipment available

First Aid Knowledge:
• Know how to make a Scene assessment
• List the Primary Survey
• List the priorities of casualty management
• Know how to call for help
• Know how to recognise and treat a suspected:
o Fractures
o Dislocations
o Strains and sprains
o Cramp
• Know how to recognise and treat suspected:
o Compression
o Concussion
o Skull fracture
o Spinal injuries
• Know how to treat a suspected spinal cordinjury:
o Demonstratemanual in line stabilisation on a suspected spinal cord injury casualty
o Demonstrate log roll on a suspected spinal cord injury casualty
o Demonstrate the recovery position using two people
• Know how to recognise and treat suspected:
o HeartAttack
o Seizures
o Diabetes
o Stroke
• Know how to recognise and treat suspected breathing problems:
o Asthma
o Hyperventilation
o Drowning
o Choking
• Know how to recognise and treat suspected:
o Small cuts
o Grazes
o Bruises
o Minor burns
• Know how to recognise and treat shock and bleeding:
o Identify types of bleeding
o List the signs and symptoms of shock
o Demonstrate treating shock
o Demonstrate controlling simulated external bleeding

Basic Life Support:
• Demonstrate turning a simulated casualty from front to back
• Demonstrate the action for regurgitation
• Demonstrate putting the simulated casualty into the recovery position
• Demonstrate using manikins basic life support for the following casualties:
o Adult sudden collapse
o Adult drowned
o Child
o Infant
• Demonstrate on a manikin basic life support with the use of a pocket mask
• Demonstrate on a manikin opening an airway for a suspected spinal cord injury casualty

Pool Rescue Skills:
• Demonstrate a reaching rescue for a simulated weak swimmer
• Demonstrate a throwing rescue for a simulated weak swimmer
• Using a rescue aid perform a rescue over 5m:
o Demonstrate a wading rescue on a simulated weak swimmer
o Demonstrate a rescue of a non-swimmer
o Demonstrate a rescue of a weak swimmer
o Demonstrate a rescue of an injured swimmer
o Demonstrate a rescue of an unconscious casualty
• Demonstrate a rescue of a non-swimmer over 5m
• Demonstrate a rescue of a weak swimmer over 5m
• Demonstrate a rescue of an injured swimmer over 5m
• Demonstrate a rescue of an unconscious casualty over 5m
• Demonstrate a rescue of an unconscious casualty from the deepest part of the pool:
o Demonstrate the retrieval of a submersible manikin from the deepest part of the pool
o Demonstrate simulated resuscitation in the water
o Demonstrate the safe landing of a simulated live casualty onto poolside
• Demonstrate how to stabilize a facedown suspected spinal cordinjury casualty in shallow water:
o Demonstrate a spinal stabilization method
o Demonstrate team stabilisation
o Perform a horizontal team lift

This qualification is trainer assessed. 

To complete the qualification, candidates must:

  • Demonstrate the primary survey and turning face down to face up
  • Demonstrate the procedure for action for vomit and recovery position
  • Using a manikin demonstrate basic life support for adult sudden collapse
  • Using a manikin demonstrate basic life support for an adult drowning casualty
  • Using a manikin demonstrate basic life support for children
  • Using a manikin demonstrate basic life support for infants
  • Using a manikin demonstrate obtaining an airway on a suspected spinal injury
  • Demonstrate a Reaching Rescue over 2m
  • Demonstrate a Throwing Rescue over 5m
  • Demonstrate a Wading Rescue over 5m
  • Demonstrate a water based rescue using a buoyant aid over 5m for a:

    Weak swimmer or Non-swimmer or Injured swimmer or Unconscious

  • Demonstrate a water based contact rescue over 5m for a:

    Weak swimmer or Non-swimmer or Injured swimmer or Unconscious

  • Demonstrate recovering a simulated body from the pool floor, CPR and landing onto poolside
  • Demonstrate the rescue of a suspected spinal injury casualty in shallow water
