VSLC Emergency Paediatric First Aid Qualification

Our Emergency Paediatric First Aid Qualification covers core aspects of first aid treatment for children and infants – including CPR, recovery position and choking management for children and infants. This course is normally delivered over 1 day.

Governance: Taught in line with European Resuscitation Council Guidelines

Duration: 6 hours contact time
Validity: 2 years from the date of the course. Refresher training is recommended at least annually.

 

Understand the role and responsibilities of the emergency paediatric first aider:

  • Explain the role and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider
  • Explain how to minimise the risk of infection to self and others
  • Identify when to use personal protection equipment when providing first aid
  • Identify contents of a paediatric first aid kit
  • Identify the need to complete an accident report/incident record
  • Define an infant and a child for the purposes of first aid treatment

Be able to assess an emergency situation safely:

  • Conduct a scene survey
  • Conduct a primary survey on an infant and a child
  • Identify when to call for help

Be able to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and breathing normally:

  • Place an infant and a child in the recovery position
  • Continually monitor an infant and a child whilst they are in the recovery position
  • Assist an infant and a child who is experiencing a seizure

Be able to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally:

  • Identify when to administer Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to an unresponsive infant and
    an unresponsive child who is not breathing normally
  • Administer CPR using an infant and a child manikin

Be able to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is choking:

  • Identify when choking is:
    • Mild
    • Severe
  • Administer First Aid to an infant and a child who is choking

Be able to provide first aid to an infant and a child with external bleeding:

  • Explain the types and severity of bleeding in infants and children
  • Control external bleeding

Be able to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is suffering from shock:

  • Recognise an infant or a child who is suffering from hypovolaemic shock
  • Administer First Aid to an infant or child who is suffering from hypovolaemic shock

Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child with bites, stings and minor injuries:

  • Explain how to administer first aid for:
    • Bites
    • Stings
    • Small Cuts
    • Grazes
    • Bumps and Bruises
    • Small Splinters
    • Nose Bleed

This qualification is trainer assessed. 

To complete the qualification, candidates must:

 

  • Successfully complete course worksheets
  • Successfully conduct a scene survey
  • Successfully demonstrate a primary survey and recovery position
  • Successfully demonstrate CPR for children and infants
  • Successfully demonstrate safe use of an AED
  • Successfully demonstrate the correct procedure for the management of choking
  • Successfully demonstrate the management for external bleeding and treatment of shock
